How to make a Hand Fasting Ribbon (or braid six ribbons)

As you all know, I am getting married soon.  In 64 days in fact, that’s nine weeks and counting. There is still A LOT TO DO! But, at least the handfasting ribbon has been made, hurrah! And, being the kind giving person I am, I thought I’d make a little tutorial for any of you fellow DIY wives, or anyone who wants to braid six ribbons, because I found it quite hard to find a decent tutorial out there that didn’t involve watching a painfully slow YouTube video.

To make:

Braiding six ribbons it seems has four simple steps:

Step one: tie the six ribbons together at the top. Either use a hair tie or tie each ribbon to a metal ring (or similar).  Ideally keep the ribbons as flat as you can

Step two: On one side take the outer ribbon OVER the ribbon next to it and UNDER the third ribbon. (see the white ribbon below)

Step three:  From the other side take the outer ribbon UNDER the ribbon next to it, OVER the next ribbon and then UNDER the ribbon you just placed into the centre. (see the green ribbon below)

Step four: tie the ribbons at the bottom.

In other words:

OVER, UNDER

UNDER, OVER, UNDER

Repeat.

Now, there is a trick, as you want the sides to look uniform, from the left or the OVER,UNDER side, the ribbon naturally folds quite well but from the other side you need to make sure you keep the fold consistent, whether the fold goes under or over.

It helps to have a second pair of hands to hold the ribbon, and if you are making a hand fasting ribbon who better than your other half!

This is so great and beautifully done! We did a handfasting and I ended up making six separate cords, one to go with each of our vows. I just did a traditional three ribbon braid for each of them. Will you be hanging any charms from the ends? We went a little crazy and had a different charm at each end. One was a mini-frame with a photo of our cat!
